Topics to be covered include:

 

1. Burns and Bombing Cases;
2. Cases Involving Drowning and Asphyxia;
3. Important issues related to exhumation and after-the-fact case investigations;
4. Important issues related to animal and non-human forensic examinations;
5. The value of crime re-enactments;
6. Media Relations;
7. The Trial and Investigative Timelines;
8. How cold case interrogations in custody are affected by the Sixth Amendment;
9. How cold case interrogations in custody are affected by the Miranda warnings with respect to invocation of silence and request for an attorney; and
10. Professional interrogation skills and attributes needed by interrogators.

 

Method of Presentation: PowerPoint presentations using actual case examples.

 

Text Supplied: As part of the course, each participant will be provided with the book, “Homicide Investigation” as a reference to the lecture presentations.  The book on CD-ROM format contains 21 chapters and appended works on related topics like “Criminal Interviews and Interrogations” that will be helpful to any investigator.

James Simmerman, Marshall Chief of Police, former St. Louis Homicide Detective and Chief Investigator for the St. Louis Medical Examiner. He has taught criminal justice, management, and forensic courses at several colleges and universities, and presented hundreds of seminars on homicide and forensic death investigation.
